Native Montanan
Douglas Nagel (Count Orlock) baritone made his
operatic debut at 19, with the Billings Symphony
under George Perkins in The Magic Flute. After
receiving his MM from the San Francisco Conservatory
of Music, Douglas joined the faculty at California
State University, Hayward, and held a similar
position at Southern Oregon University, Ashland, OR.
As Opera Director
he produced, directed and often conducted Die
Fledermaus, The Tales of Hoffmann, Gigi, Pajama
Game, The Pirates of Penzance, Il Tabarro, Gianni
Schicchi, The Hand of Bridge, L’Egisto, Riders to
the Sea, The Magic Flute, The Scarf, The Telephone,
The Impresario and L’Ormindo. While in Hayward he
began a Summer Opera Theater program with attendance
of over 50 singers.
Active as a
dramatic baritone, Mr. Nagel has sung with such
companies as Opera San José, The Virginia Opera,
Opera Idaho, Santa Barbara Grand Opera, Eugene
Opera, Arizona Opera, Greater Buffalo Opera Company,
The Western Slope Summer Music Festival, CO, and
Bear Valley Music Festival, CA. His repertoire
includes Scarpia, Don Giovanni, Germont, Sharpless,
and Eugene Onegin to Wotan. Recent engagements
included roles in La Cenerentola, The Marriage of
Figaro, Die Fledermaus, The Flying Dutchman and Don
Giovanni. The role of John the Baptist in Salome was
one of Mr. Nagel’s signature roles, as he made his
European debut in Rostock, Germany, and repeated it
with Opera Columbus, The Virginia Opera, and The
Opera Co. of Philadelphia.
Douglas takes great
pride in bringing Opera to Children. He adapts
full-length operas to mini versions for touring in
the schools. Those opera’s include The Tales of
Hoffmann, Die Fledermaus, Trouble in Tahiti, Hansel
and Gretel, The Impresario and The Magic Flute.
Douglas received a grant from the Utah Arts Council,
along with the National Endowment for the Arts to
produce "Let’s make an Opera" in a Salt Lake area
grade school. Mr. Nagel will join Opera Idaho Adult
and Children’s Chorus Master, Linda Berg, to
instruct a summer camp for young adults. Mr. Nagel
made his OI directing debut with The Magic Flute.
As Artistic
Director of Opera Idaho from 2003-2005, along with
the same position at Rimrock Opera, Douglas directed
Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Don Pasquale, Carmen, The
Merry Widow, and Hansel and Gretel for both
companies. He is currently Education Director at
Opera San José in addition to his Rimrock Opera
position.
