Andy Anderson,

Maestro Andy Anderson, praised by critics and audiences for his “sensitive and lyrical” conducting, has been Artistic Director of Mobile Opera since 2008. On his debut with Mobile Opera, conducting Lucia di Lammermoor, the Mobile Press Register commented on Maestro Anderson’s “impressive debut.” Paul Horsley, of the Kansas City Star said, “To hold together like this and make it fun for performers and listeners is a rare gift.”

A noted interpreter of the works of Giacomo Puccini, Mr. Anderson was the founder of the Kansas City Puccini Festival. Over the span of ten years, the annual festival performed the complete works of Puccini. In 2005, the Kansas City Star listed the festival’s performance of Turandot as one of the “top 15 classical music and dance events in 2005.”

On his debut in the summer of 2009 as Music Director of Light Opera Oklahoma, The Sondheim Review said “Andy Anderson conducted skillfully, eliciting a lush sound from his pit orchestra and shaping the songs with the actors rather than merely accompanying them.” In the summer of 2010, Maestro Anderson returned to lead productions of Patience, The Boy Friend, and Kiss Me, Kate.

Prior to the transition to Mobile in the summer of 2008, Maestro Anderson was the Artistic Director of Civic Opera Theater of Kansas City. Productions with Civic Opera included Ned Rorem’s Our Town, Menotti’s The Medium, the world premiere of Everlasting Universe by John Mueter, The Mikado, Weill’s Street Scene, Verdi’s Falstaff, Sondheim’s Passion, A Gilbert & Sullivan Christmas Carol, and Puccini’s Edgar. For eight seasons Anderson was Music Director of the Kansas City Civic Orchestra. While Music Director, the orchestra grew from a community orchestra to a major orchestral “voice” in the Kansas City area. A focal point of the orchestra’s programs was an offering of lesser known masterpieces, along with the standard repertoire. Further focus of the orchestra, under the baton of Anderson, was the performance of Gustav Mahler’s works. Maestro Anderson returned to Kansas City to conduct the 50th Anniversary Gala concert with the Kansas City Civic Orchestra featuring soloist Mark O’Conner.

Other recent performance highlights have included a debut with the Mobile Symphony, La Fanciulla del West , Carmen, La bohème, The Merry Widow and Il barbiere di Siviglia with Rimrock Opera, The Pirates of Penzance and Il barbiere di Siviglia, with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, My Fair Lady, A Little Night Music and The Gondoliers with Light Opera Oklahoma, Der fliegende Holländer, Love and Lust and Sweeney Todd with Mobile Opera, a debut with Amarillo Opera conducting Carlisle Floyd’s Cold Sassy Tree, the North American premiere of The Queen Symphony by Tolga Kashif and Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, and Handel’s Messiah with the St. Joseph Symphony. While serving as assistant conductor with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Anderson conducted The End of the Affair and Aida.

Other opera credits include La rondine, Madama Butterfly, Le nozze di Figaro, Manon Lescaut, Edgar, La traviata, Tosca, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, Ariadne auf Naxos, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Il tabarro, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Amahl and the Night Visitors and La bohème.

Maestro Anderson also serves as the assistant conductor of the Colorado MahlerFest in Boulder, Colorado. He held the same post for three seasons with the Kansas City Ballet.

Upcoming performances include Tosca, Candide, and The Light in the Piazza with Mobile Opera, Rigoletto and Turandot with Rimrock Opera.
