Mark Lin,
baritone, is of mixed Chinese‑Spanish heritage
and was born and raised in the Far East. He
began his musical training at age seven at the
piano, and studied voice in college, earning a
Master of Music degree in voice performance from
Manhattan School of Music in 1992.
He has
performed in the South and the Midwest, where
his roles included Yamadori in Madama
Butterfly, Schaunard in La bohème,
and Dr. Grenvil in La traviata. He
participated in the New York première of
Alessandro Scarlatti’s Eraclea with
Opera
Nova in the summer of 2000.
In New York
he was a Resident Artist of the
Dicapo
Opera Theatre for two years, where he
sang roles in Lucia di Lammermoor,
Rigoletto, La Vida Breve and
Vanessa. In 2001 he sang the Commendatore
in Don Giovanni and Don Alfonso in
Così fan tutte with
New York
Opera Productions. He has also sung with
the
dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, this time
singing the title role in Don Giovanni
and repeating Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte.
With the
National Lyric Opera he has toured New
England in roles such as Marullo in Rigoletto
and the King of Egypt in Aida. In the
fall of 2001 he appeared as Leporello with the
Little
Opera Company of New Jersey, and then
joined the
Sarasota
Opera as an Apprentice Artist for the
2002 season.
No stranger to
contemporary music, he has sung the first
performances of several scores. He created the
role of Dead Mao in the multimedia opera Mao
Zedong: Jealous Son by Yoav Gal, performed
at La
MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. He sang
the bass soloist in an original score by
composer Kitty Brazelton for the world-premiere
choreography Time Remaining by Gina
Gibney, presented by
Gina
Gibney Dance at New York’s
DanSpace
Project in fall 2002. Apart from his
operatic roles, his repertoire includes the
baritone solos in the Fauré Requiem and
the Brahms German Requiem, the bass solos
in Handel’s Messiah, and a broad range of
art songs in several languages for recitals.
Upcoming engagements include Schaunard in La
bohème with Rimrock Opera and Yamadori in
Madama Butterfly with Toledo Opera. Mr. Lin
is managed by Wade Artists Management, New York.
